Beaches

Mallorca has a plethora of beaches, coves and bays to choose from. Whether you are looking for an action packed beach liked Puerto Pollensa, a hip beach like Illetas or tranquility like Mondrago there is a fine selection. Here are a few contrasting and dramatic options.

Alcudia

This beach is a popular family beach as 11 miles of golden sand sweep round the bay and you have to walk a good four hundred meters to find swimming depth. Our recommendation to find a quieter part of the beach is to drive through Pto Alcudia/Alcudia towards Can Picafort along what some call The Strip (a road populated by restaurants, fast food outlets etc). Keep going and you'll pass signs for S'Oliverge on the left hand side, make a left at the next possible turning. There's a pedestrian crossing, and a cross roads sign but otherwise no real distinguishing landmarks except some individual villas and two story apartments. This is a beach to go and sit, relax, lay and do nothing.

Colonia Sant Pedro

On the other side of the bay to Alcudia is the unspoilt, undeveloped and simply charming bay of Colonia Sant Pedro. A very quiet fishing village with just one small hotel, and about six wondeful sea food restaurants this is the perfect beach for those looking to escape the more developed areas.

Pto Pollensa

This is a man made beach with sand brought from the other side of the island. It's quite a long one running parallel to the road into Pto Pollenas. At one end you'll find Bacares where the kite surfers literally hang out, and at the other you'll find the calm lapping sea where many learn to kayak, windsurf or just relax. Every kind of water activity can be found here.

Mal Pas/Sillot

Head through Alcudia towards the peninsula of La Victoria and you'll come across Bonaire Marina. Just past here is a car park and a beach that is actually rocks, you can lay on the rocks, and jump into the water from them. This is normally pretty quiet, and populated by locals. Good for snorkelling and with a funky new bar a good summer time spot. Keep heading around the coast and eventually you'll see a beach bar S'illot. A good spot for a shingly beach with a bar with a view.

Cala San Vicent

Made up of two little coves and is a sleepy resort with calm waters. Divers often use this as an entry point and it's a nice place to relax with the Hotel Niu offering a good place for some fish at lunch time just on hand.

Pto Valldemossa

If you can bear a very windy, and often narrow road it's worth a trip down to this cove. It's impossible to buy property here if you're not Mallorquin, and there are no hotels. In fact there's only one apartment that can be rented from above the fish restaurant. Consequently this is a real find and a very different pebble beach experience.

Deia

You'll possibly share the beach here with the likes of Bob Geldof, Annie Lennox, Hanif Kureishi or other celebs. The beach is invariably packed with lovey types who are residing in Deia. But it's a fun place to be and if you're looking for a bit of a posing beach this is a good solution. The beach bar serves great food, from a kitchen in a cave!

Illetas

Coming round towards Palma the beach of Illetas is popular as it has the virtual bar next to it which is actually a very chilled place to lounge around on one of the hammocks, beds or comfy cushions scattered around the place. The beach gets VERY busy at the weekends and actually is quite a buzzing place all through the summer.

Portixol

At the east end of the Passeig Maritimio is the road to Portixol, follow this to get to one of the coolest places to hang out. A small but sandy beach, lots of good bars and restaurants and a really nice relaxed atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Es Trenc/Sa Raipta

To the south of the island are the sand dunes of Es Trenc and Sa Rapita. The least developed part of the coastline this offers lovely beaches. For the delicate of disposition its worth noting this beach can be favoured by naturists too.

The Calas

On the east coast are hundreds of little coves, some accessible by car, but many only by foot or boat. A couple of the best are Cala Mondrago which is actually a national park, and the Calas de Mallorca with Cala Murada being a favourite. These vary from sandy to shingly but are often tree lined and very pretty, a stark contrast to the long sandy beaches further towards Alcudia.
