Puerto Soller

About a thirty minute drive from Palma, situated on the rugged Tramuntana coastline is the beautiful horse-shoe shaped bay of Puerto Soller which hosts a small harbour and a fine family resort. With a sandy bay and pedestrian sea front this is a perfect place for families looking for a relaxing summer holiday. In the Spring and Summer the surrounding mountains that form the valley of Soller and Fornalutx offer the perfect base for walkers and cyclists. Once separated from the rest of Mallorca by the difficult mountain trip Puerto Soller's harbour was its gateway to the world. It was easier to sail back laden with goods from France than make the harsh and dangerous journey across the mountains. Puerto Soller and Soller had closer relations with France than Palma. Hence the port has a feel of Southern France about it, epitomised by the grand frontage of the Esplendido hotel.

Beaches around Puerto Soller

The main beach of Puerto Soller is a small sandy strip flanked by restaurants, cafes and seaside shops selling Mallorca mementos. Looking across the bay from here the wider beach of Repic is just a five minute walk way.  Blending port and beach the bay offers a very protected, safe environment and the diving platform situated about 50m off shore offers fun and frolics for the children. The Soller beach is the best sandy beach in the area but others that are worth a visit are the very quiet and undeveloped stony beach of Puerto Valldemossa, the busier and chicer cove of Deia, or for the fearless take a drive down to Sa Calobra which leads to the pretty amphitheatre bay of Torrente de Pareis.

Things to do in Puerto Soller

There are daily boat trips around to Sa Calobra and this makes for a great diversion from sunbathing and is a good way to really appreciate the mountain range that forms the north coast. Take the tram into Soller square and soak up Mediterranean life at one of the cafes lining the edges. Or enjoy a fishing trip out to the bay and catch your lunch. For mountain bikers, hikers and divers there is also plenty to do and enjoy. Visit our activities pages to see more about what's available.

Things to see in Puerto Soller

Puerto Soller is mainly a resort for relaxation during the summer, but for those that feel the need for some history take a visit to the Museu de la Mar which explains the importance of the Mediterranean Sea in the history of Soller. Fishing, invasions and pirates are just some of the themes reviewed.  Puerto Pollensa is a fishing village that has developed into a tourist resort area so sites are limited. The sunset from Es Faro, the lighthouse is simply stunning and a wonderful way to end a summers day.

Places to eat in Puerto Soller

There are many places to eat in Puerto Soller with everything from typical Mallorcan food through to fine dining being available. For a spectacular setting book a table at Faro where you are welcomed with cava, and can enjoy the fish you choose from the daily fresh selection. Situated on the hillside of the fisherman's area with a lovely view of the marina is Ribas specialising in locally caught fish and tasty Mallorcan cuisine. A number of simple restaurants can be found in the fisherman's district - for more information about restaurants in the area please visit www.skybluemallorca.com

Unique features of Puerto Soller

Connecting the Puerto with the old town of Soller is the island's only tram which makes a 20 minute journey along the sea front passing by orange groves until it reaches the main square of Soller. A great way of getting into the old town its also a piece of Soller history. Reflecting the beauty of its area and its desirability as a destination the Jumeirah group, most famous for the Burj Al Arab in Dubai have selected Puerto Soller as its location for its first European continent hotel.

Facts about Pto Soller

Market - in the main town of Soller on a Saturday
Fiesta - Second week of May the town goes crazy re-enacting the battle of the Moors and Christians, alcoholic fuelled, chaotic and a lot of fun.
Golf - Soller is in the mountains so consequently doesn't lend itself to its own golf courses but Son Termens is a short 20 minute drive away. Alternatively head back to Palma and the Son Vida courses for a choice of three others.
Spa - The hotel Aimia offers a selection of treatments in its modern spa which is open for day guests.
Parking - the best place to park is in the Repic beach car park which can be accessed just before you hit the pedestrian zone of the port.
