Pollensa

Pollensa is about an hours drive from Palma. It is an old medieval town overlooked by the convent of Puig Maria which has been there centuries. The town is centred around a charming square which hosts a number of cafes, galleries, and bars and is a great place for some tapas and a sundowner. Whilst it has become a popular location for artists and musicians it has retained its traditional Mallorcan feel exemplified by its narrow winding streets. The surrounding country side is absolutely breath taking and worth exploring.

Beaches around Pollensa

As is often the way in Mallorca Pollensa is the inland town of the Port of Pollensa and as such takes about five minutes to reach by car. The bay of Pollensa is ideally suited for families and water activities fanatics. For those looking for something smaller with less going on the sandy bays at Cala San Vicente also make a good sun worshipping spot.

Things to see in Pollensa

Pollensa has a number of shops and galleries that are arts and crafts related and as such if you enjoy art its great just wandering around the streets and seeing what you can discover. If you're feeling energetic take a walk up to the Puig de Maria and take in the 360 views of the bays and countryside. If you're in town around Easter join the locals lining the 365 steps of the Calvari for one of the most moving re-enactments of the last steps of Christ before the crucifixion. Even if you're not religious you can't fail to be moved by the spectacle. For the more adventurous join the re-enactment of the battle of the Moors and Christians that takes place in mid-august. A frenzy of people, music and alcohol make for one of the liveliest fiestas on the island.

Things to do in Pollensa

Its worth taking a stunning drive into the mountains and exploring Lluc monastery which is about a 30 minute drive away. The monastery which hosts a black Madonna found by a shepherd boy called Luke this is a beautiful Shangrila type retreat located high in a mountain valley. Pollensa is also a great base for walkers wishing to make the most of the dramatic Tramuntana range. During the summer there is a classical music festival that takes place in the Cloisters and its most definitely worth getting hold of tickets to enjoy some of the internationals musicians who include a wide variety of styles from the Academy of St Martins in the field to Roger Hodgson founder of supertramp. Pollensa is filled with restaurants of all sorts, from simple tapas bars on the square to the more elaborate restaurants on the square. On the outskirts of Pollensa the imposing Son Brull's restaurant 365 serves modern Mediterranean – reservations a must. On the main square Il Giordino serves superb Italian influenced food, whilst Clivia takes Mallorcan fish dishes and dishes and turns them into their own. If you fancy trying the local P'an B'oli the Bar Espana on the main square serves P'an bolis large enough for even the most hungry of visitors. Places to stay in Pollensa

Retaining its charm Pollensa's hotels are all converted town houses. One of the areas oldest hotels is the Juma on the main square which recently celebrated 100 years of life. For something more modern try its sister hotel the Hostal Pollensa. For a great bed and breakfast option Des Brull opposite the cloisters is a clean, modern and excellent choice for those on a budget. If you're swept away by the religious fervour of Lluc check yourself into one of the old monk's cells. There is nothing more magical than waking up in this mountain retreat before the coach loads arrive.
