Palma Tapas

Tapas have come along way from their beginnings. Originally a couple of olives, a slice of tortilla or a piece of bread and ham were placed on a saucer and rested on top of the glass. This "tapa", cover, was on the house in the old days. These days the tapas are more elaborate, and they are rarely free, however we think the following bars, and cafes offer tapas worth paying for.

La Boveda, Passeig Sagrera 3.

This is one of the oldest and the best tapas bar in town. Tapas are traditional, prawns in garlic, mussels, chorizos, jamons and a whole plethora of taste bud experiences. Definitely a good place to eat!

La Paloma – C/Apuntadores 16.

Situated on a busy street this is the best tapas bar in a row of them that appeal to the less discerning tourists. Modern tapas such as carpaccio of bison, artichoke and bacalo salad, sit alongside the more traditional meatballs and calamares. The menu offers a wide selection to suit all. The portions are generous and in a world where finding good tapas is often a challenge this is a great place to go. Best visited in the evening.

Lizaran - C/Unio

At the other end of the Passeig Born just opposite the Hostal Brondo, is Lizaran where all the tapas come served on a slice of baguette, so providing a very filling and cheap lunch. The tapas are displayed in cabinets and you just choose which you like and they add up the dishes at the end of the meal. Traditional decor and the buzz of the Spanish chat make this a fun lunch stop.

Tast – C/Unio 2B

About 50 yards further along from Lizaran is Tast which serves traditional tapas such as octopus, calamares, garlic prawns and hams. The waiter brings you a large tray covered in tapas and you just make your selection.

El Pilon - C/Cifre 4.

This cavernous place serves a bewildering array of traditional tapas in somewhat dark but authentic surroundings. This is particularly interesting as you can watch them being prepared in the open kitchen. A great place to stop and line your stomach before enjoying one of Casa Solleric's (just on the corner of Can Granada and Paseo Born) infamous gin and tonics.
