Fornalutx

About a twenty five minute drive from Palma, situated just beyond the old town of Soller sits the pretty village of Fornalutx. Often said to be one of the prettiest in Spain the mountain backdrop, the orange and lemon groves and the mares stonework of the houses make this one of Mallorca's loveliest villages. There is one main road leading through the village with a small square offering a refreshing place for a coffee or something cool.  In the Spring and Summer the surrounding mountains offer the perfect base for walkers, cyclists and artists and the season begins early here because of this.

Beaches around Fornalutx

The closest beach is Puerto Soller which is a small sandy strip flanked by restaurants, cafes and seaside shops. The Soller beach is the best sandy beach in the area but others that are worth a visit are the very quiet and undeveloped stony beach of Puerto Valldemossa, the busier and chicer cove of Deia, or for the fearless take a drive down to Sa Calobra which leads to the pretty amphitheatre bay of Torrente de Pareis.

Things to do in Fornalutx

Fornalutx is a wonderful subject for photographers with the mares stone and sparkling sun creating a wonderful light against the ragged mountains. For mountain bikers, hikers and  photographers there is plenty to keep you busy and the path up the steep face of the barranc from Biniarix leading to the pinnacle of L'Ofre is popular with those who are passing through. For food lovers the olive oil press of Can Det in Soller makes for a fascinating incite into olive oil production and just goes to show why this liquid gold is so important to the island.

Things to see in Fornalutx

There is not much to see in Fornalutx except its wonderful beauty, its worth taking a trip to the highest point and admiring the views but otherwise its just a lovely place to amble around. For those looking for something to do visit Soller and its tropical gardens.

Places to eat in Fornalutx

Cafe Sa Panxa in the square has a good selection of drinks and is a cool place to sit, relax and take in the atmosphere. On the road out of Fornalutx going towards the mountains the restaurant Es Taro is renowned for its Mallorcan specialties and it is rumoured that Spanish royalty eat here often. A terrace seat in the summer requires a reservation. If you are looking for an authentic local bar with tapas then visit Es Tambor Pages where the locals will be making their coffee last hours, and enjoying their tapas with views of the orange groves. The unique feature of the village is its charm and beauty and worth a visit to see a Mallorcan village preserved as it has been for years. With narrow streets, alleys and stairways this labyrinthine village charms all who visit.

Facts about Fornalutx
Market – in the main town of Soller a Saturday
Golf – Fornalutx is in the mountains so consequently doesn't lend itself to its own golf courses but Son Termens is a 20 minute drive away. Alternatively head back to Palma and the Son Vida courses for a choice of three others.
Parking – the best place to park in one of the blue bays on the outskirts of town, or in the car park just as you arrive from Soller, if you park anywhere else you'll be ticketed or towed…
