Located in the central Mallorca region of Es Raiguer is the very Mallorcan village of Campanet. Extending out from its central square the village spiders its arms across the hills and valleys of citrus and olive groves. About a forty five minute drive from Palma this is a traditional village where the locals enjoy a coffee in the morning and a late night drink during the fiestas in the summer. Mainly a farming community Campanet offers a real insight into the tranquillity of Mallorcan way of life.
Campanet is located just a twenty minute drive from the long sandy beaches of Pto Alcudia and the golden bay of Pto Pollensa. Alcudia bay, which is about 11km in length, has calm waters and is perfect for young families as the sand banks form a natural shelf for about 200 meters before swimming depth is reached. Pollensa's bay is also protected and provides a safe swimming environment for families. There is a couple of miles of golden sand with sun-beds and other facilities. Even in the busy months of August there is a sense of space on the beach.
As a quiet Mallorcan village there is not a huge amount to do in Campanet, which is part of its attraction. However as a working village its worth visiting the glass blowing factory of Menestralia on the outskirts of the village. Here you can witness the traditional glass blowing methods that create the distinctive Mallorcan chandeliers and lights. Campanet is a great location for those that enjoy cycling and walking with its combination of almond fields and the foothills of the mountains it's a great place to come and be at one with nature.
Campanet is well known for two natural phenomenon that are worth visiting. The first are the Caves of Campanet. Found in 1945 by local workers the caves cover 3 200 square meters and some of the chambers go down nearly a 1000 feet. Dripping water combined with the local rocks form magnificent stalactites and stalacmites creating rooms such as the palm Tree Chamber and the Lake Chamber. The caves are definitely worth visiting and offer a refreshing cool spot in the heat of summer. For those visiting when the rains are around then its worth taking in the spectacle that is Ses Ufanes. An underwater spring that seems to bubble out of the ground when heavy rains fall is really quite astounding. If its not raining its worth taking in the area too just for its beauty.
As a small village there are a limited number of eating options in Campanet but the two bars on the main square, Bar Club and Si Galleria offer great tapas and the typical Mallorcan dish of Pan B'oli. The terrace at Bar Si Galleria has wonderful views over the mountains of the Tramuntana. For a treat head up to Hotel Monnaber Nou where the restaurant specialises in Mallorcan fare using products from its own estate and recipes that have been handed down in the family for years - for more information about restaurants in the area please visit www,skybluemallorca.com
Whilst there are no hotels in the village itself the lovely old estate of Monnaber Nou offers great accommodation in beautiful countryside. A spa, lavish pool and tennis courts make this a superb rural property. Son Pons is an old finca which has been fabulously restored to a modern but comfortable rural hotel and is just a ten minute drive from the main square of Campanet.
