Alcudia

Originally founded by the Romans, under the name Pol.lentia, Alcudia has, for centuries,  been one of the most important towns in the north of Mallorca.  The Moors renamed the town Al Kudi, and this was the name that stayed after the Christian reconquest.  The Medieval old town with its imposing walls and narrow meandering streets retains its original charm, whilst just a few kilometres away you can find the modern and more developed Port d'Alcudia. This juxtaposition of old and new makes Alcudia the perfect base for those seeking a more authentic Mallorca without renouncing the benefits of a modern tourist resort.

Beaches around Alcudia

In common with other towns in Mallorca, Alcudia was established inland, to help to safeguard the inhabitants from pirate attacks.  However thereare many beaches nearby.  Don't write off the Platja Gran, the main beach inPort d' Alcudia, because, although it can be busy in the summer, the 7 kilometres of clean golden sands, gently sloping into the sea are an ideal and safe location for families who want to enjoy a traditional bucket and spade holiday.  If you prefer the beaches where the locals go then try Aucanda, s'Illot (with its fab beach bar) or Es Bacares.

Things to See

The Roman ruins include a well preserved theatre which was carved out of the rock, and the local museum displays some of the finds that have been excavated.  Also looking back to Alcudia's past, the 14th century town walls are an imposing backdrop to the outdoor concerts held during the summer months.

Things to Do

Nearby Port d'Alcudia, with its wide, horseshoe bay is a great base for watersports, and offers everything you might want from a modern resort.  If however you seek gentler pleasures then you should not miss the Albufera wetlands to the south of Port d'Alcudia.  Covering over 1600 hectares this protected area is a haven for birdwatchers and walkers.  Finally we suggest visiting the Fundacion Yannick y Ben Jakober, a unique museum and gallery which includes a collection of over 150 paintings of childhood, a sculpture park and rose garden.

Place to Eat

In Alcudia and the surrounding area you can find a huge variety of restaurants and cuisines on offer. One of our favourites however is Can Costa which specialises in  traditional Spanish and Mallorcan cuisine and is located in an old Mallorcan house with courtyard.  If you prefer something a little more contemporary then a great option is Genestar.  Located close to the town walls, this restaurant offers a contemporary take on Mediterranean cuisine.  For light snacks, including the traditional Mallorcan pamboli then try Cas Capella.  And finally for that day when you really don't want to leave the beach at midday then the beach bar at Es Bacares is not to be missed. Places to Stay

Away from the big  tourist centres of the Port, the town of Alcudia offer some unique accommodation to fit all budgets.  Can Simo is a luxurious boutique hotel.  With just 7 rooms the converted manor house is intimate and welcoming.  Close by, Cas Ferrer Nou was once the blacksmith's shop.  The young owners have renovated the building to create a stylish and contemporary hotel with six individually styled rooms.  Six kilometres from Alcudia, and located on a hilltop with marvellous sea views, La Victoria is a former hermitage which offers simple accommodation for visitors who are seeking peace and traquility.
